Objectives

Student learning objective 1: Be able to recall the various disease-producing agents in the respiratory system and describe their interaction with normal lung tissue to cause loss of function (pathophysiology).
Student learning objective 2: Be able to recall the diagnostic methods specific to the respiratory system (both invasive and non-invasive) and understand the use and interpretation of these methods in the approach to various types of respiratory disease.
Student learning objective 3: Be able to understand how different regions of the respiratory system function normally and are changed through disease. Be able to recognize these changes histopathologically.
Student learning objective 4: Be able to recall the disease agents most prevalent in major groups of veterinary patients (ie. Equine, bovine, small animal, lab animal, etc.) and to identify the characteristic pathologic changes.

Learning Aids

There is currently no text that covers this material for veterinary medicine. Therefore, the course syllabus will provide the major reference material for preparation for lectures and study. Any required reading will be clearly indicated and made available.
A suggested text for general overview of respiratory pathophysiology is West JB: Pulmonary Pathophysiology-the essentials. Williams and Wilkins, 2001. This text covers only human disease, but the principles are useful.
